Symptom Capture and System Walk
We start by listening. What symptom brought you to call. When it started. Whether it is intermittent or constant. What was changed or serviced before it started. Then we walk the whole system: outdoor condenser, indoor air handler or furnace, thermostat, accessible duct runs, register grilles. The walk catches obvious issues like a frozen evaporator coil, a tripped breaker, or a disconnected condensate float switch before we plug in a single gauge.
Refrigerant and Electrical Measurements
Gauges on the service ports for high and low side pressures. Superheat and subcooling calculated against outdoor temperature and indoor wet-bulb. Compressor and condenser fan motor amp draw measured against the nameplate. Capacitor microfarad measured against spec. Contactor inspected for pitting. Control voltage verified at the board. This is where the actual fault almost always reveals itself, and it takes about 12 minutes once the gauges are connected.
Airflow and Static Pressure
Most AC repair calls in Las Vegas are actually airflow problems. We measure CFM across the evaporator with a flow hood and total external static pressure with a manometer. Static pressure above 0.8 inches w.c. means restricted airflow that the equipment cannot overcome, no matter how new it is. This is the step almost every other contractor skips, and it is the reason your last repair did not fix the underlying problem.
Furnace and Combustion Diagnostic
For furnace repair calls or heat pump back-up heat issues, we run a combustion analyzer on gas appliances. What is the most common HVAC repair you see in Las Vegas?
Capacitor failure, by a wide margin. Las Vegas heat accelerates capacitor degradation and most homeowners hear the symptom (compressor will not start, fan motor humming but not spinning, system clicking but no cooling) and call for AC repair. The diagnostic confirms a $25 part has failed and the $190 repair is done in 25 minutes. The second most common is restricted airflow from filter neglect or duct issues, which presents as poor cooling but is rarely the equipment.
Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?
The math says replace when the repair cost plus next-three-year expected repair cost on aging equipment exceeds 50 percent of new installation cost, or when the system uses R-22 refrigerant (no longer manufactured, $200+ per pound when available), or when a major component has failed on a unit older than 14 years and the rest of the system shows obvious wear. Yes. Parts carry the manufacturer warranty (typically 1 to 5 years on common HVAC components, longer on compressors and heat exchangers). Our labor is warrantied 90 days on diagnostic repairs and 1 year on major repairs (compressor, evaporator coil, heat exchanger replacements). Why did my last HVAC repair not fix the problem?
Almost always because the contractor replaced the most visible failed part without measuring what caused it to fail. The classic example: a contractor replaces the start capacitor on a 2-stage compressor, the compressor runs for two weeks, then the capacitor fails again. Root cause was high static pressure (clogged filter plus a closed return register) starving the system and forcing the compressor to draw locked-rotor amps for too long. Without measuring airflow and static pressure, the replacement repair never gets to the cause.
