A ductless mini split is its own complete heating and cooling system for one space: garage gym, casita, home office, or an addition your ductwork was never built for. Installation typically takes a day per zone. The two decisions that make or break it in Las Vegas are honest sizing for a west-facing desert room and placing the outdoor unit where summer sun will not cook its performance.
Every Las Vegas house has a space the central system pretends does not exist. The garage that hits 130 degrees by 3 pm and kills any hope of a home gym. Extending your ductwork into these spaces is usually expensive, often impractical, and sometimes flatly against the physics of what the existing system can support. This is exactly the problem the ductless mini split was built to solve.
How a Mini Split Works
A mini split is a two-piece heat pump. An outdoor unit handles compression, an indoor head mounted high on the wall delivers the air, and the two connect through a three-inch wall penetration carrying refrigerant lines, power, and a condensate drain. No ducts anywhere. Because modern mini splits are inverter-driven, the compressor speeds up and slows down continuously instead of banging on and off, which is why they hold a space at temperature so quietly and sip power doing it. Nearly all of them heat as well as cool, so the garage gym works in January too.
Where They Earn Their Keep in the Valley
Garages. The single most requested mini split install we do. An uninsulated Vegas garage is unusable half the year; with a right-sized head it becomes a gym, a shop, or the hobby space it was always supposed to be. We will be straight with you about insulation, because conditioning a garage with an uninsulated steel door is pouring cooling into a sieve.
Casitas and ADUs. A detached guest house should never share the main home’s system, and a mini split gives it independent control with its own thermostat.
Additions and conversions. When a patio becomes an office or a new primary suite goes on the back, tapping the existing ductwork usually steals air from the rest of the house. We measure whether the central system has the capacity, and when it does not, a mini split serves the new space without robbing the old one. That measurement mindset is the same air balancing discipline we apply to whole homes.
The one room that never behaves. Sometimes the answer to a stubborn room is fixing the ductwork feeding it, and sometimes the honest answer is that the ductwork was never going to reach it. We tell you which one your house is after we measure, not before.
What the Installation Involves
A single-zone mini split installation typically takes a day. The indoor head mounts on an exterior wall where airflow can wash the whole space, the penetration is drilled and sealed, the line set runs in a tidy exterior channel, and the outdoor unit sets on a pad or wall brackets. Electrical is a real part of the job: most units want a dedicated circuit, and we coordinate that properly rather than piggybacking something marginal. Then the system is vacuumed to spec, charged by weight and superheat rather than by feel, and commissioned with measured supply temperatures. Multi-zone systems, one outdoor unit feeding several heads, follow the same process across two or three days.
Two desert-specific decisions matter more here than in most markets. First, sizing: a west-facing garage or a glass-heavy addition in this climate carries a serious load, and both oversizing and undersizing show up fast in an inverter system’s behavior. We calculate the load rather than guessing from square footage. Second, outdoor unit placement: a condenser baking against a west block wall in July works measurably harder than one placed in shade or on a north exposure. Small siting choices buy real capacity on 115-degree days.
What About the Rest of the House?
Mini splits solve the space your ducts cannot reach. Well-installed and maintained units commonly run 15 to 20 years. The two things that shorten that: a sloppy refrigerant charge at install, and years of never cleaning the filters and coil. We charge by instrument at install, and our maintenance visits keep the rest on schedule.
One zone or multi-zone, which do I need?
If you are solving one space, single-zone is simpler and usually the better value.
