Henderson Furnace Tune-Up: A Pre-Winter Checklist (October and November)

Quick Answer

Schedule your Henderson furnace tune-up in October or early November. A real tune-up is combustion analysis plus electrical and safety checks, not a quick filter change. The window before peak winter is open and parts are easy to source. Skip it and you risk a no-heat call on the coldest night of the year.

What 'Tune-Up' Should Actually Mean

A real Henderson furnace tune-up is a 60 to 90 minute diagnostic and service procedure. It includes combustion analysis (Bacharach analyzer measuring CO output, oxygen, stack temp, draft pressure), heat exchanger inspection (visual plus electronic flame-rectification testing), ignitor and flame sensor cleaning, gas valve and manifold pressure verification, blower motor amp draw and capacitor measurement, thermostat calibration, and condensate trap cleaning on high-efficiency furnaces.

It does not mean: walk in, change the filter, slap a sticker on the unit, leave. That's a 'visit,' not a tune-up. The visit-only approach misses 80 percent of what a real tune-up catches.

Why October and November Is the Right Window

Henderson HVAC contractors get slammed with no-heat emergency calls starting late November when the first cold snap hits. From December through February, our schedule is mostly emergency and reactive. Tune-up bookings have to wait or get squeezed into evenings.

Booking in October or early November means: our schedule is open; parts are easy to source if anything needs replacing; any problems found can be repaired without an emergency-rate service call (saving 25 to 40 percent versus emergency dispatch); the heat is working when the cold snap arrives.

Common Findings (Most of Which Are Cheap to Fix)

Dirty flame sensors: very common, very cheap to clean. A dirty flame sensor causes the furnace to lock out after 5 to 30 seconds of trying to light. Fixed in 5 minutes during a tune-up.

Weak ignitors: hot-surface ignitors have a 3 to 7 year lifespan. Failure mode is often soft (slow start, occasional no-light) before total failure. Replacement during tune-up is preventive, not reactive.

Blower wheel buildup: 1-inch filters bypass dust around the edges. The dust accumulates on the blower wheel over years, reducing airflow. A blower wheel cleaning during the tune-up restores design airflow.

Capacitor weakness: blower motors fade gradually as the run capacitor loses microfarads. Measurement during tune-up catches this 6 to 18 months before a hard failure. Replacement is an inexpensive part versus emergency-call cost.

Safety Checks We Don't Skip

Carbon monoxide is the reason this matters. We test combustion at every tune-up. CO output above 100 parts per million in the flue indicates incomplete combustion that can become a CO leak risk if vent integrity degrades.

Heat exchanger integrity is checked visually (where accessible) and electronically (flame-rectification testing on serviceable models). A cracked heat exchanger sends combustion byproducts into the breathing air. We don't work around this. If we find one, we shut the unit down and discuss replacement immediately.

Draft pressure is measured to confirm the venting system is moving combustion gases out. A blocked vent or weak induced draft motor can let combustion gases back-draft into the home.

What It Costs and What You Get

Henderson furnace tune-ups are priced per unit depending on furnace type (80 percent versus 90+ percent AFUE) and accessibility. The fee includes a written report with combustion data, electrical readings, and any recommendations.

If repairs are found and you authorize them during the same visit, the tune-up fee is credited toward the repair. We do not push repairs that aren't needed. The point of the tune-up is to leave you with a system that runs safely and reliably through the winter.

Henderson HVAC FAQ

How often should I tune up my Henderson furnace?

Annually for furnaces over 8 years old or systems with prior reliability issues. Every 2 years for newer systems with religious filter changes. Combustion analysis and safety checks should be annual on any gas equipment.

What if my furnace is electric, not gas?

Electric furnaces still benefit from annual service: airflow measurement, element inspection, sequencer test, blower motor and capacitor check. Combustion analysis doesn't apply but the electrical and airflow side does.

Can you tune up my heat pump?

Yes. Heat pumps get a parallel tune-up: refrigerant pressure check, defrost cycle test, electric backup heat verification, plus standard airflow and electrical checks. Heat pumps run year-round in Henderson, so semi-annual maintenance is the standard.

How long does the tune-up take?

60 to 90 minutes per furnace. Multi-unit homes scale linearly. Combustion analysis adds 15 minutes.

Will you push me to replace the furnace?

No. We tune up. We tell you what we find. If a safety issue exists, we explain it and let you decide. Replacement is recommended only when math justifies it.
