Why 1-inch Filters Aren't Enough

The 1-inch fiberglass or pleated filter at the air handler is meant to protect the equipment from large debris. It catches the lint and pet hair that would clog the evaporator coil. It is not designed to remove fine particulate, smoke, or allergens from your indoor air.

MERV ratings are how filter efficiency gets quantified. A 1-inch MERV 8 captures large dust. A 1-inch MERV 11 starts catching pollen and mold spores but creates significant pressure drop. A 1-inch MERV 13 chokes most residential systems. The fix is a deeper filter slot.

4-inch and 5-inch Media Slots Change the Math

A 4 or 5-inch media filter has 4 to 5 times the surface area of a 1-inch filter. That extra area means MERV 13 (good for fine dust, smoke, allergen removal) becomes feasible without choking the system, and MERV 16 (medical-grade) is possible on most residential equipment.

Aprilaire makes the most common drop-in filter cabinets and media: model 213 (4-inch MERV 13), model 413 (4-inch MERV 13 high-cap), model 1610 (5-inch MERV 13), model 2410 (5-inch MERV 13). Filter changes happen every 12 to 18 months, not every 60 to 90 days.

What Henderson Air Actually Contains

Particulate measurements in the Henderson area regularly exceed 12 micrograms per cubic meter PM2.5 during summer dust events and winter inversions. The EPA's safe threshold is 12 micrograms (annual average). Henderson can hit 35 to 50 micrograms during California wildfire season events.

Do humidifiers really need a water line?

Yes. Whole-home humidifiers tie into a cold water supply, drain into the HVAC condensate or a floor drain. Standalone room humidifiers don't need plumbing but only treat one room.

Will an ERV cool my home in summer?

An ERV doesn't replace AC. It handles fresh air ventilation, transfers some sensible heat between airstreams, but the AC still does the cooling. ERVs make sense as a comfort and health add-on, not a cooling solution.

What does a full Henderson IAQ package cost?
